SHALLOTTE – The Shallotte Police Department is investigating a single car crash that left one teen dead and injured two others.
In the early morning hours of Wednesday, Feb. 10, the department was dispatched to a 911 call on Bridgers Road. Officers arrived on the scene shortly after 4 a.m. The vehicle was submerged in about 7-feet of water.
Shallotte police officers along with deputies from the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office and Shallotte firemen acted quickly to retrieve the passengers of the vehicle. Passenger Caleb Smith, 13 of Carolina Shores, was pronounced dead at the scene. Devin Harris, 19, and his brother Justice Harris, 16, were transported to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center with injuries.
“It does not appear that the vehicle ran off the road, there are no marks,” Shallotte Police Chief Rodney Gause said on Wednesday morning. “The accident is still under investigation.”
Investigation at the scene shows that the vehicle was travelling toward N.C. 130 on Bridgers Road at the time of the accident. The vehicle appears to have hit the left side of the bridge before leaving the roadway and becoming submerged in water.
“Shallotte officers, the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office and the Fire Department did a phenomenal job,” Gause said. “I also want to thank the North Carolina Highway Patrol for their assistance.”
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the teens in this difficult time,” Gause said.
